I just finished watching John Naughton’s lecture “you can’t always get what you want”. In this lecture he talks about the evolution of media presentation. From radio, television, movies, and now the internet. These media have started as an open platform for development, but have always been taken over by innovative individuals who provide a cleaner presentation of the system. This new system overtakes the old platform and evolves to become that platform. Naughton debates that this may be the future of the internet, dominated by companies like Google and Facebook. I feel that while this is likely, the internet provides the easiest platform to resist these changes as well as fight against the influence of these innovative companies. If there was a chance to break the cycle, the internet is the first one to truly provide it.
